From a free tool that turned UI mockups into HTML/CSS, to a paid product hitting ~$200 MRR — all on organic SEO.

Image2CodeAI started as a simple bet: frontend developers already have a mockup. What if they could drop that image in and get usable HTML/CSS boilerplate back?

The free launch

I shipped the first version as a free tool in December 2023. The loop was intentional:

  1. Upload a UI screenshot or mockup
  2. Generate HTML/CSS
  3. Copy, tweak, ship

It grew to 2k+ free users without paid acquisition. Search was the channel — people looking for ways to turn designs into code found it, used it, and came back.

Going paid

After validating that people actually wanted the product, I relaunched it as a paid tool. Within about six months it reached ~$200 MRR, still mostly from organic traffic.

Lemon Squeezy — $5k+ all-time revenue

That stretch taught me more about packaging, retention, and SEO than any tutorial. The product stayed narrow on purpose: one job, done well enough that strangers would pay for it.

What I'd do differently

I'd instrument conversion and retention earlier, and treat content/SEO as part of the product from day one — not a growth afterthought. The core idea held; the systems around it were what made the numbers move.
